room upgrade
Remember that room I had planned on remodeling a few posts back? Well, I’ve actually made quite a bit of progress over the last couple of weeks.
The horrid crown molding? Gone. The pink ceiling? Now a soothing Swiss Coffee. The baseboard? Updated. The old disgusting carpet? Replaced with laminate flooring. The electrically dubious ceiling fan? Replaced with a new fan/light fixture.
I’m feeling pretty accomplished right now. But there is still tons to do. Since this once guest room will now be our office I’m going to move all of our office things into the room. This includes moving our cable (for the cable modem) which I’m just a bit tentative about doing – as it involves drilling through the exterior wall.
And in other news, no rain in sight yet. Spring is still here.

That is funny about the crown molding… we are dreaming about putting it UP in our house! You guys have a more modern way of decorating. We are going for about the period our house was built, which is 1906.

Normally, I really like crown molding and wouldn’t mind it at all. The crown in this room, however, was very poorly installed. Normally crown is at a 45 degree angle between the wall and the ceiling. This crown was mounted flat against the wall – probably because it was installed by an amateur who wanted the look but didn’t know how to do an actual install. The corners were also poorly fitted, with massive 1-2 cm gaps, which they filled with caulk (badly). Up close, it was really horrendous…. trust me. I ripped that stuff down and patched the dry wall with new mud, re-textured the wall and slapped some primer/paint over the top of that. It looks much better now.
