our impending sixth sense
If you are interested in technology at all, I urge you to go check this video out from the TED conference.
And even if you are not into technology per se, you should definitely go check out TED anyway. You can spend hours watching videos of ground breaking stuff.
I had dreams of this kind of technology as a kid, actually. I always thought that I’d have some kind of cool implant that augmented my reality. Like overlaying objects or people over the real world seamlessly, so I could see a toaster in my kitchen that wasn’t really there. Maybe that’s not the best example, but this has potential to vastly expand or lives as we know them today. Just think of the video games you could immerse yourself in, the phone calls to relatives who seem like they are sitting accross the table from you. And of course what would any new technology be without porn. The adult entertainment industry will be all over this one.

Wow, this is really incredible. It reminds me of the technology in the movie Minority Report. I can see all kinds of amazing uses for this technology. I can also see that too much use of something like this might might create a reliance on hard data available at all times. If someone were conditioned to this constant reliance on a device, they would not develop the fuzzy logic skills that we rely upon in daily life, were this device suddenly immobile. Anyway, I can only imagine that this kind of device will be available soon, given it’s simple components. Apple must be all over this thing.

I couldn’t agree more. And just like when my friend and I were kayaking and had to bail out early, we were crippled by our lack of cell phones – not remembering any phone numbers, because we simply never had to. If we begin to rely on this kind of technology too much, does that mean we’re actually dumbing ourselves down? Maybe. Or maybe we’re enabling ourselves with vast unlimited knowledge. Either way, it’s exciting stuff!
